For Starwork’s Fire Fest in North Carolina, Ashwini Bhat created a work entitled AGNIJA, Born of Fire, which emerges from her long-term contemplation of the interdependency of species. Inspired by ecology, and more specifically termite mounds and ant hills found in Southern India, Bhat creates this hybrid, biomorphic form made of clay.
The adaptive structure is constantly changing and transforming as it moderates heat flow, gas exchange, and captures wind energy. In many parts of India, people worship the termite mounds, as they are seen as sacred dwellings of the snake god, Naga. The community actively adorns the mounds with flowers, turmeric, and vermilion to show their commitment to protect and worship the sacred. The mound itself then becomes a shrine with ritualistic elements of earth, water, air and most importantly fire.
As Ashwini rediscovers the beauty of fire, she ponders fire’s link to life, death, and rebirth. With Ashwini working at the intersection of sculpture, installation, video, and performance, she demonstrates all the destruction and regeneration of fire as she creates a vessel charged with ritual, spirituality, and ecology.
